The focus on security in the IoT area has never been higher and more important. Microsoft has been investing in the space of Industrial IoT and edge computing and on February 24th 2020 Microsoft announced the general availability of Microsoft Azure Sphere, a 3-part solution featuring a secure: System-On-Chip (SoC) device, operating system and cloud service. In conjunction with this announcement qiio launched their q200 for Azure Sphere solution, which is based fully on cellular connectivity.

Connected field service is the idea of enabling businesses to use the latest technology to enhance their field services offerings and be more agile and responsive to customer service needs. You don’t have to dig deep to understand the benefits from it and why it’s time for you to start to care. In this article we will give you 3 reasons why you should consider implementing the technology into your everyday business. 
<h3>what is the internet of things (IoT)?</h3>
IoT has a huge impact on almost everything we do today, why business cannot longer ignore the value of it. In its essence IoT is the technology that allows objects to send and receive data via the internet. It describes the idea of everyday physical objects being connected to the internet and able to identify themselves to other devices. By connecting an object to the internet, it can represent itself digitally and become something bigger than the object it would be alone.

<h2>How can we improve safety in the construction industry?</h2>

In a unique cooperation between <a href=\"https://www.ncc.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NCC</a>, <a href=\"https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft</a>, Sigma, <a href=\"https://www.arrow.com/ecs/na\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arrow </a>and <a href=\"https://edinsbyggkranar.se\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edins Byggkranar</a> we have developed digital safety barriers to identify risks when working with heavy crane lifting.    
Most large construction sites have a crane that is important part of the workload. Lifting can be difficult with limited visibility, which makes heavy crane lifting a large safety hazard. NCC wanted to explore if digital safety barriers could increase safety on construction sites. Together with Sigma, Microsoft, Arrow and Edins Byggkranar, NCC is now testing new technology for object detection. At the construction site <a href=\"https://www.uppsalauniversitet.se/en/news-media/news/article/?id=11386&typ=artikel&lang=en\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ångström Laboratory </a>outside Uppsala, they now explore if digital barriers with object detection can alert workers on the ground and prevent them from being under suspended loads from tower crane.

One of the core priorities in the construction industry today is health and safety. For the last 10 years, looking at the Nordic countries, the construction industry is one of the industries with most fatal accidents, where one of three high-risk areas are heavy crane lifting. 
One of NCC:s key focus areas are safe workplaces. When it comes to heavy crane lifting NCC do a lot to prevent accidents from happening, they have processes and physical barriers in place, but the human factors always remains a risk and there is always more that can be done. Therefore, NCC wanted to examine if they could complement and increase safety on construction sites with digital safety barriers – using AI technology in the cranes.

The purpose of this test is to explore if digital barriers can increase safety when working with heavy crane lifting. The goal is to prevent personnel from being under suspended load from a tower crane. In this test Sigma wanted to show that image analysis can be used to interpret what is under and near the crane. 
<h2>solution </h2>
At the test site, Ångström Laboratory outside Uppsala, cameras, computers and network has been installed on a crane. Cameras attached under the tower crane collects images that is being processed in the computer located in the crane cabin. The Azure based solution has been trained to detect people and vehicles under the crane using deep learning on real time video. The processing is done in the crane cabin to instantly alert the crane operator and the personnel on the ground if they are inside a defined risk area.

<h2>results</h2>
By using modern cloud technologies such as AI and Machine Learning we are able to bring new ideas to life. The first step in this test has been to train the AI -model in Azure with images that’s been collected. A simple view has been built to visualize the current situation analyzed by the AI-model. This test has shown that it is possible to detect, and in the end also warn, employees who are under suspended loads or are on their way into a risk zone. It also shows that computer vision works in near real-time, with image processing executed directly in the crane. 
The project has been very much appreciated and welcoming in the construction industry since it encounters a risk area when it comes to heavy crane lifting interlocked with the human factor.

<h1>A FEW STEPS TO SUCCESS BY UTILIZING CLOUD, ADVANCED ANALYTICS AND IOT</h1>

The last three years we have worked tight together with Anticimex International to define and create their new digital services and scale their services based on connected devices (IoT).
These connected devices monitor and control pests—including rodents, cockroaches, and other insects—across each location, whether it’s a restaurant, hotel, sports stadium, or sewage system. All of the collected data, from the number of pests caught to movement triggers, is continuously fed into Azure IoT Hub and stored in a data warehouse hosted on Azure. By analyzing this data, Anticimex staff can gain unique insights and make better decisions.

All of this is, obviously, what you can expect from any professional implementation of connected devices and digital services. Anticimex had done its homework well and identified the right use cases and their respective business cases,  on top of that designed its services and products well. The traps are incredibly efficient.

In a journey of digital transformation, development of new services, cloud transformation and infrastructure services there are a lot of decisions to make and a lot of loose ends to keep track of. 
<ul>
<li style=\"font-size: 20px; text-align: left;\">First of all, there is a legacy in operational service that needs to be maintained and further enhanced and developed. Both software and hardware.</li>
<li style=\"font-size: 20px; text-align: left;\">There is the device team that creates new hardware and connectivity technology choices.</li>
<li style=\"font-size: 20px; text-align: left;\">There are ongoing projects to merge the legacy products into a new connectivity platform, taking care of hot and cold analysis pipelines, development of dashboards and API services, internal and external consumers.</li>
<li style=\"font-size: 20px; text-align: left;\">There are advanced analytics teams that strengthens the performance of the services offered.</li>
</ul>
The short term strategy we used was to create value of what we have at start, and scale that through internal user adoption. We created a small add-on analytics project with Azure DataFactory, Azure DataWarehouse and  Power BI dashboards for the different regions and the sales teams. This approach created internal traction immediately, the product owners got feedback directly from business owners and a lot of new ideas from the users, as input for future services.
The long term strategy we used was to adapt all new technology enhancements in the devices into Azure IoT Hub, over time replacing old and proprietary connectivity technology solutions, whether it is hubs & spoke, mesh based networks, new NB-IoT connectivity solutions or back-end services. By streamlining and adapt to standards a more agile approach can be used, hence more responsive to customer requirements, internal or external. This yields both to the hardware projects and to the software projects.
Within the long term strategy we started an Advanced analytics team, with that vast amount of data collected, we started to explore how to predict battery depletion time in the specific traps contextual environment. By utilizing contextual data and battery depletion cycles we can now predict when batteries need to be replaced, and even when batteries need to be discarded. By doing this Anticimex is now in full control of optimizing their field service teams operations. This subject is a topic that needs its own blog entry, more to come!   
To conclude; The old saying, Think Big but Start Small is not only a saying, it works. I've seen project budgets sky rocketing when the scale up of a project is to fast, and the management think that they know what the business and the operation need. By starting small, as in this case, operations and customers had the chance to reflect and understand the possibilities and what type of insights they need and what's possible to get. For Anticimex this means that they can focus on expanding their business in more regions/countries, with a profitable business and still focus on the large scale business that is ahead of them.

If you are a tech junkie, you have probably heard about Industry 4.0 which is and has transformed the manufacturing thanks to digitization. Some people would probably dismiss Industry 4.0 as another marketing buzzword, but the truth is that manufacturing is shifting and will impact other areas such as smart cities and cars to mention a few. This means you can no longer dismiss Industry 4.0 as another marketing buzzword. In this article we will talk more about Industry 4.0 and the impact 5G will have for the future of it. 
<h3>THE DIFFERENT INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTIONS</h3>
So, first of all, what do we mean when we talk about industrial revolutions, and how do they change our lives? The American economist and social theorist Jeremey Rifkin has a clear view of what defines an industrial revolution. An industrial revolution is characterized by technical advances in three main areas; energy, transport and communication. With this in mind, let us take a short walk down the memory lane to fresh up our minds how the previous industrial revolutions changed our lives.
It should not come as a surprise that we been through three industrial revolutions before this one, which we are in right now. Industry 1.0 used water and steam to mechanize production and laid the groundwork for industry 2.0, with its mass production model and the evolution of machines on electrical energy. Industry 3.0 is significant by the rise of computers, internet and high-level information technology which made it possible to automate the production. Industry 4.0 builds upon industry 3.0 and is characterized by merging technologies that blurs the lines between the physical, digital and biological spheres that will and are transforming industries and businesses all over the world. 
<h3>INDUSTRY 4.0</h3>
Significant for Industry 4.0 is the focus on interconnectivity, automation, machine learning and real-time data. This revolution takes place in the digitalization rather than the emergence of new energy. The digitalization has made it possible for us to build a virtual world from where we can steer the physical world. The aim is to connect our different objects and make them communicate and interact with each other, possible thanks to technology such as Cloud, Big Data and IoT.
Industry 4.0 makes it possible for factories and companies to use information and communication technology to become more efficient. By combining real time data with predictive analytics, industries and companies can identify warning sign before they become failures. This means that manufactories and businesses can produce more and reduce costs by using real-time data. The fourth industrial revolution are leading us to more connected devices which puts more pressure to the networks that these devices are connected to, which is why 5G will become a key player when it comes to the future of Industry 4.0.
<h3>WHAT DOES 5G MEAN FOR THE FUTURE?</h3>
Not only mobiles, computers and tablets will be connected to internet in the coming years but a whole range of everyday objects like smart stores, cars, cities to mention a few. Ericsson predict that around 29 billion devices will be connected to the Internet of Things by 2022, a number we can expect will continue to grow.
So, IoT has played a major role for Industry 4.0, but the challenges we see today is that the 4G doesn’t have the capacity to accommodate that many devices and guarantee exchange of information without lag time. 5G will eliminate these challenges with its extremely fast data speed and ability to support higher number of connected devices, it will help IoT to unleash its full potential and be the true enabler of Industry 4.0 future.

Sigma is growing and we are always looking for talented people who wants to join our team. Meet our new colleague Karl Westerberg who is joining our team in Seattle as a Business Development Manager. Karl has a background working within the IoT world. 
<h3>Karl, tell us more about yourself?</h3>
\"As the first person in my family born in America, we didn't have any other family on this side of the ocean, but fortunately North Dallas had a large influx of Swedish families at that time with many families in the same position that banded together to continue Swedish traditions. Growing up with both languages at the same time, we spoke Swedish at home and English with our friends - and even had weekly Swedish schools for the children to learn reading and writing. I took online courses again in high school to solidify my learning\"
<h3>Have you ever visited Sweden?</h3>
\"My family spent nearly 2 months every year back in Sweden to immerse me in the culture and visit family, which kept my love for my heritage alive. This tradition stopped when I could start working, and got my first job at 16 in the new IKEA in Frisco.
Still, my upbringing in a hybrid Texan/Swedish culture was very different to that of everybody I knew, and being able to spend a lot of time in Stockholm and far out in the countryside gave me a love for Sweden and a drive to continue its culture and heritage.\"
<h3> CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND? </h3>
\"I began my education with a large emphasis on technology and computer science but figured out that I was far more interested in economics. So i finished my BsC in that. After I graduated I have worked in many various analyst roles in different industries, collecting experience and exposure in understanding how to find value throughout departments within an enterprise. I joined an IoT startup to make my way to Seattle and entrench myself in the IoT world.  While there, I did many things from business development, to leading a small dev team for proof of concept work, vendor management, and solutions.\"
<h3>Why sigma? </h3>
\"Sigma is pioneering the world of IoT, they are an industry leader of technology services, and Sigma has the integrity to do a project/solution thoroughly and properly. There's also the added bonus of joining a Swedish company and the culture that comes along with it, which is something I have wanted for a long time.
What I want to do with my time here at Sigma is to use my  understanding of both the business and the technology to show all of our clients/partners how to create and maximize value from our IoT and technological offerings.
IoT is necessary to keep track of our complexity-increasing world, and with Sigma I believe we can connect the world the right way, the best way.  With European advancement and American business sense, I believe we will make this happen.\"

<h2>machine learning & AI</h2>
Yes, AI and machine learning has been on the list of digital trends for a couple of years, but there is no need to invest in data if you don’t plan to invest in AI and Machine Learning. In order for businesses to understand big data and get the most out of it, they should invest in programs to make the data understandable. AI and Machine Learning helps them do so. 
So, if you want your company to survive you have to invest in data and analytics. It might sound harsh, but it’s the truth. With Analytics you can turn raw data into insights for better decision making. In its essence Analytics can be described as the scientific process of discovering and communicate meaningful patterns found in data, and when it comes to growth and measurement analytics starts to play a bigger roll.
Data and Analytics will help your business become even better. For example, it can tell how successful your business is on the market and also predict where the market will move next. Another area that will continue to grow in 2020 is cloud computing. Cloud computing has been a trend in IT since it entered the mainstream arena in 2006, when AWS announced the launch of its Elastic Compute Cloud. But it was not until 2010 that cloud computing started to lead the IT revolution by fully transform the way computers and software operate. 
Today cloud adoption for both private and public sectors have increased in the last years, it allows people access to applications through the internet instead of running them on physical computers or servers. Using the cloud brings a lot of benefits, and if you really want to stay ahead and take decisions based on data instead of gut feeling you should consider cloud computing and business intelligence. Why? Because it’s a perfect match! BI-systems deliver right information to the right people at the right time, and the cloud computing delivers an agile way to access Bi- applications. Start 2020 in the best possible way by migrating cloud computing with your BI-systems.
<h2>5g</h2>
If 2019 was the year 5G actually took off, 2020 will be the year when next generation of network will have a meaningful impact of the masses. The fifth generation of wireless communication standards doesn’t only make it possible to download a full-length movie in a second, it will open a new world full of possibilities that we can’t even imagine yet. The 5G will give the development of smart cities, smart vehicles and manufacturing the essentially requires processing of real time data sensors and IoT connectivity. This will be a game changer for people, businesses and the society.

Did you know that worldwide spending on Artificial Intelligence systems will be nearly $98 billion in 2023 according to a report that<a href=\"https://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS45481219\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #78c7c9;\"> IDC</a> did in September 2019. That’s more than two- and one-half times the $37,5 billion that will be spent in 2019! With massive data volumes that will continue to grow, and algorithms that is getting more advanced, business will continue to invest in projects that utilize the capabilities of AI (Artificial Intelligence) software and platforms. 
But before you spend a lot of money on AI you need to understand what it is, and the value of using it. In this article we will give you a brief overview of what AI is, different perspectives on it and what kind of business value it can bring.
<h2>What is AI?</h2>
So, what is Artificial Intelligence or AI? One thing is clear, it’s a massive area with many depts and depending on who you ask you will probably get different answers. In this article we will try to keep it simple.
In its essence we can explain AI as the science and engineering of building intelligent machines that reasons and take actions. You can use AI in your organization for perception, understanding, language, optimization, automation and planning to mention a few. But let’s look into that further down and instead dig into different perspectives of AI.
<h2>Two different perspectives</h2>
When we talk about AI it’s easy to think that it’s something that is going to be totally automated and take our jobs. That’s not really the case and something we don’t have to worry about to a certain extent. AI will of course change the labor market at certain areas, but that doesn’t mean we have to be afraid of the new technology. For example, the computers changed the labor market for typewriter technicians, but this did not happen over a night. Yes, AI will change the way we work, but not in a way that will make us all unemployed. With new technology new jobs also occur.
As already mentioned, you will get different answers what AI is depending on who you ask, there are many different perspectives on AI and what you can do with the technology. Let’s look at two of these different perspectives and the contrast between these.
<h3>ARTIFICiAL INTELLIGENCE</h3>
First of all, we have the traditional perspective of Artificial Intelligence that is designed to work without people. It’s built to mimic human intelligence with autonomous technology systems such as computers or robots. For example, self-driven cars. Even though self-driven cars are in a very early stage with a lot of work remaining it’s a good example of a more traditional view of AI. 
<h3>Intelligence augmentation</h3>
The other perspective of AI is Intelligence Augmentation, IA, that is designed to work with people. For example, a GPS. It’s not the GPS that is going to drive your car, you are still responsible for the driving, but the GPS-tool will help you navigate and not get lost in traffic, and hence become a better driver. 
So the IA perspective focus on how humans together with technology can be even better, while the more traditional perspective on AI focus on how the technology can work without human interaction. 
Remember that these are just two perspective of what AI is, and it’s important to keep in mind that it’s not black or white. There are many different perspectives of AI and how to use the technology and companies can use AI for different reasons depending on what the business value and goals are.
But why now? AI, is something that’s been around for a while but it’s not until now that companies starts to understand the value of it and spend money on AI-systems. Let’s take a closer look.
<h2>Why now?</h2>
Today there is a big convergence between cloud computing and massive amount of data being available. One of the reasons why we see a growing interest in AI and money spent on AI software and platforms is big data. Big data refers to large data, booth structured and unstructured, that is fast or complex which makes it difficult or even impossible to process it using traditional methods.
Historical there have been leaps in algorithms of how to handle this data. But today AI has moved beyond prototyping and into a phase of execution and implementation thanks to developed algorithms. With more advanced algorithms companies can use and analyze data to reduce costs, streamline and find new business opportunities. In order to be relevant and stay ahead of competitors companies need to analyze and use data to find new insights. 
<h2>Business values</h2>
Before you spend a lot of money on AI you need to understand what it actually does and the business value using it. Today a lot of companies wants to work with AI, but you can’t just work with AI just because, you need to have a purpose. What a lot of companies do wrong today is that they try to find new problems and solve them with AI, instead of using new technology to solve problems that already exist. 
Ask yourself what the business value of working with AI would be? Do you want to make your customer more engaged, or maybe understanding them better? Or optimize your business and find the best way to work with a certain task. Maybe you want to create a new product or change an existing one? Or empower employees with data to make sure that people working in your company have rich set of capabilities in their hands? You see, there is a lot of things you can do with AI and different “problems” that can be solved.
So, first of all you have to ask yourself what the purpose investing in AI is and what value this would bring to your organization. If you don’t have a clear purpose, then you might think twice before you invest in AI.
